They sat on the boarding house porch and saw the sun plunge into the same crack in the earth from which the night emerged.
This is last paragraph of ch. 4 which refers back to this theme of nature in the book. This also is symbolizing the end of one part of Janie’s life and the beginning of a new part. The night is her getting married to some one she wants to not made to. Janie in this instance is doing what she feels is right for her, something we have not seen so far out of Janie.

Hey Daniel,
I agree with your interpretation of the last paragraph in chapter 4. I thought the sun setting was representing her old life with Logan too.. and how the "night" or her new life with Joe was about to begin.
Good blog. See ya in class.
k wow now i feel like the odd one out cause i didn't really look at it that way
but i do agree with your interpretation, it makes a lot of sense that it would be symolizing the end of her old life and the begining of a new one. I took a slightly more negative look at it but maybe if the night symbolizes her new life and the night represents darkness and sometimes pain could it be that her new life will not b what she expected and more of her hopes and dreams will b crushed.
thats just my rather pessimistic view on it lol
